The amazing thing about evaporative cooling, and the key to its environmental credentials, is that it uses water as its working fluid, and not potentially harmful ozone depleting CFC refrigerants. A constant flow of fresh air is simply drawn over water saturated pads, which act as both ‘chiller’ (as the water evaporates off the pads it removes the heat) and 'filter' of dust and pollen. The result is a cooling system which has incredibly low running costs - it is estimated evaporative cooling uses 80% less energy than traditional air conditioning - and a tiny carbon footprint.
