Installed by Clean Air at a cost of less than £60K, a Breezair evaporative cooling system is providing World Duty Free Europe (WDF) with a cost effective and environmentally friendly solution which is also highly economical to run. Temperatures in its NDC (National Distribution Centre) have reduced from sweltering summer highs in excess of 36°C to comfortable ambient temperatures of around 22°C.
Originally built over 30 years ago, the 88,000 sq. ft. the NDC warehouse complex employs a workforce of 214 and operates 24-7 to provide a continual flow of Duty Free goods to BAA plc’s seven airports throughout the UK.
Located close to a residential area and subject to strict planning restrictions, the warehouse complex has no windows for natural daylight and ventilation. Access is limited to fire doors and the goods-in/out entrance at the front of the building. During the summer months, the NDC became excessively hot, a problem that was compounded by the recent addition of a mezzanine floor which has been installed in half the building to provide extra storage. Employees working on the mezzanine were subjected to even higher temperatures, which necessitated World Duty Free Europe finding a solution to the problem.
Dismissing air conditioning as an unviable option, the company originally installed an air change system. Although this had a limited effect, it did not resolve the problems of excessive temperatures on warm, sunny days.
Looking for an alternative solution, World Duty Free Europe asked Clean Air for ideas to resolve the problem. The suggestion was the highly advanced Breezair system, which uses evaporative cooling technology to provide a constant flow of naturally cooled air throughout a building.
Following a site survey, Clean Air arranged for 13 units to be installed on the roof of the building, with internal vents strategically placed throughout the warehouse complex. The temperature in different areas of the building can be controlled manually through wall-mounted climate control panels offering four different control modes.
"There is no doubt that summers in the UK, especially in the South are getting longer and hotter", says Mike Pincott, Head of Property & Logistic Development, World Duty Free Europe. "The Breezair system has proved to be extremely successful and has provided us with a very cost effective solution to our high temperature problems".
Evaporative cooling technology is ideal for large commercial and industrial premises involved in applications such as printing, distribution, manufacturing, horticulture and catering. The process is both environmentally friendly and cost effective to run - consuming less energy than conventional air-conditioning systems. Highly versatile (you can leave doors and windows open), the powerful Breezair units are capable of providing sufficient cool air to overflow and prevent hot air entering a building. As fresh air is continually drawn from outside, then filtered and washed, the potential for "sick building" syndrome (caused by constantly circulating air) is avoided..
Clean Air have been chosen by Ballymore properties to install air conditioning to
the premier apartments within their prestigous Providence Wharf development.
In addition to a complete new residential urban quarter, the development features
Dockland's largest private health complex for which Clean Air will be designing
and installing the appropriate heating, air conditioning and ventialtion solutions.
Marie Wren, Managing Director, commented
"This is an exciting project which pulls together all the skills across the Clean Air Group".
"We required air conditioning, heating, ventilation and air filtration systems,
installed to the highest standards, with the minimum fuss.
We accepted no compromises and Clean Air delivered.
This contractor excel in their business."

Staff moral at Martin-Baker’s factory is riding high following the installation of the Breezair Evaporative Air Cooling System by Clean Air. Temperatures on the factory floor have been reduced from sweltering summer highs in excess of 40C to comfortable ambient temperatures of around 23C.
Over the years, Site Manager, Graham Dumbleton had tried various methods of cooling but all had proved ineffective. During the summer months, the heat generated on the factory floor had an adverse effect on the workforce’s morale, decreasing productivity and increasing downtime.Looking at ways off improving conditions, Graham Dumbleton investigated various methods of cooling the premises and decided on the Breezair system as the most beneficial and economic to run. Following a site survey carried out by an engineer from Clean Air it was agreed that the factory would require 15 units with the coolers strategically placed to provide spot cooling at specific areas around the factory.
Clean Air have provided London Taxis International (LTI), manufacturers of the famous ‘black cab&rsquo, with a solution to the high temperatures and poor air quality suffered at the company’s Coventry workshop. The installation, which uses Breezair evaporative cooling technology, has proved such a success that Clean Air have since gone on to install more Breezair coolers to LTI’s offices as well.

LTI’s workshop is contained in a metal-framed building with a corrugated iron roof. An 1170 square metre area of the workshop is curtained off where welding is carried out. In the summer temperatures reached around 40°C which, when combined with the welding fumes, made for very uncomfortable and debilitating working conditions for the 28 employees.
Clean Air has provided Rodenstock with a cost effective cooling system, which has dramatically improved the overall thermal comfort and air quality for staff. Rodenstock, one of the world’s largest suppliers of spectacle frames and lenses, has installed Breezair coolers into three of its production halls at its state-of-the-art optical laboratory in Northfleet, Kent.
Rodenstock’s 52,000 square foot production facility is divided into six production departments. In summer, temperatures in three of these departments became unbearably hot which had a detrimental affect on staff and morale. Looking for a solution, Rodenstock decided to hire some Breezair portable evaporative coolers to assess their cooling qualities. When the mobile coolers proved to be very effective, the decision was taken to fit a more permanent solution.
Clean Air has now installed a total of six Breezair TBA coolers, with two coolers being installed in each production department. Air is distributed from the Breezair coolers via ductwork to air diffusers and then into the three areas to provide temperature relief. By introducing a steady flow of fresh, cooled air into the area, the Breezair coolers are forcing the hot air right out of the building. As a result, excessive summer temperatures have been substantially reduced, providing the 100 employees in the three areas with a more comfortable working environment.
"Breezair evaporative cooling is a first rate system for a number of reasons. It provides cooled fresh air as well as natural ventilation and in addition to being cost effective, quick and easy to install, and low maintenance it is also environmentally friendly, said Andy Cobbold. We use the wall control to turn on the Breezair coolers an hour before production begins at 6.00 a.m. and turn them off when the factory closes at 2.00 a.m."
The coolers are controlled by Breezair's wall-mounted climate control panel, which provides four different control modes. In Auto mode the system monitors the temperature and personal comfort setting, automatically increasing or decreasing the fan speed to maintain comfort. The fan speed can be varied manually in Manual mode and the system can be programmed in Timer mode to be switched on and off within a 24 hour period. Fan mode gives the simple choice of operating the system as a ventilator.
"Rodenstock’s management wanted to provide its employees with a better working environment”, concluded Marie Wren, Managing Director of Clean Air Group. “Breezair provides effective industrial cooling providing and is a simple, safe and low cost solution for the cooling of people and processes."
The Breezair system is housed in a simple, clean, ultra-modern designed plastic casing specially developed to withstand all weather conditions. The Breezair's state-of-the-art components include an innovative water distribution system, which delivers continuous, balanced water coverage to all the cooling pads. The world-patented system ensures maximum cooling efficiency and minimal maintenance problems.
An innovatively designed, aerodynamic fan provides a constant, even flow of air over the pads to provide a welcome cool breeze with minimal noise and low energy consumption. Other pioneering components include a highly efficient water pump that guarantees constant and reliable cooling when most needed, and a long lasting variable speed motor that gives maximum comfort level control.
